The field of biomechanics is concerned with the study of human motion with specific focus on feet and legs.  A major aim when applying biomechanics sports is to enhance the efficiency of motion of different parts of the body (e.g spine, legs and feet) and to ensure that much of your strength as possible is used and not wasted in correction or compensation- but focused on propulsion and leverage (such as in a golf swing or when running).

How can a  biomechanical assessment help me?

When sports training is considered, feet are often neglected despite the fact that they are the only thing in touch with the ground when we do pretty much anything.  Runners typically focus on the strength and flexibility of their thighs, knees and calf, but have little knowledge of the numerous muscles and joints of the foot.  Just like a car with a very powerful engine, small and weak wheels, can only express a percentage of the engine’s power to move forwards; the human body is just the same.  Weak, flat or unstable feet often cannot cope with the propulsive force of well developed quadriceps (thigh) muscles, so this power is lost.

Maximise your biomechanics with orthotics

Over the last decade, orthotics have become relatively common in high level sports.  Using an appropriately prescribed orthotic (insole) in your shoes can balance your step or correct the position of your feet and ensure you are using the strength you’ve worked so hard to build.
